Empire of Sin: A Story of Sex, Jazz, Murder, and the Battle for Modern New Orleans by Gary Krist
This post was inspired by Music – for some reason I saw the prompt and this book was the first thing that came to mind.
I read this book over the summer of 2015, I kept it in my car as my just in case book. The style of the writing was slightly frustrating, because it would jump back in time and revisit the time frame from the previous few chapters from another’s view point. However, the topic was very enjoyable to read about. A few times it was even jaw dropping with a shock of the true events that happened, because truth is stranger than fiction. At times it was laugh/giggle out loud because of what people said or wrote.
Overall the book was a great read on an interesting city with a very interesting law and musically history. Seeing how the music from New Orleans and laws intertwined and impacted each other. This was a guilty pleasure book, because the title is true New Orleans was (and still may be) an Empire of Sin while at the same time creating amazing jazz musicians. Several of the events are straight out of Hollywood, but really did happen.
After reading this book you will see why the daily one word prompt of “music” would make you think of this book.
