Hillbilly Elegy by JD Vance
This is not meant as any type of political statement or endorsement of any political view. The background of JD Vance has been talked about and in the interest in learning more about people who overcame serious hardship to achieve success this book was read. The Netflix movie does not do it justice, but does help the person who doesn’t want to read the book. What is interesting about this book is just how JD Vance was not plucked from obscurity to be a state senator, VP candidate, etc. he worked hard to be in the best situation for himself to have the best chance of a better life than his grandparents. It was a lesson he had to learn, and these chances were not given to him, JD Vance had to find them and work for them. Yes, the “right” school and the “right” friends may have helped in some situations but he had to earn even those. It is not a feel good book that is a light easy read, but it can be inspirational on how this man overcame many obstacles that those he grew up with may not have overcome.
