The Devil and the Dark Water

The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton

Having loved his first book and the surprise twists, I was excited to read this book to see what twists and surprises their might be. It was a good book, but the twists at the end were not exactly as I predicted or hoped for based on the author’s previous book. Almost everyone on the ship was harboring a secret of some kind that either was part of the haunting or played into people believing in the haunting. Arent Hayes is on a ship sailing back to his homeland while protecting his mentor, Samuel Pipps, who is being held as a prisoner for crimes that have never been explained to Arent. Sara Wessel, a noblewoman married to Arent’s uncle is on the ship with her daughter and hopes to escape a cruel and abusive marriage with the help of her friend. However, as the hauntings start on the ship and Sara’s husband is killed it is up to Arent and Sara to figure out who or what is behind the whispers in the dark that promise three unholy miracles. When a storm hits and the ship is stranded on an island the worst in human nature is on display, but also is when Arent and Sara figure out what is really behind the Devil in the Dark Water. No character list, as it might too hard to stop spoilers.

Perfect spooky story for the Halloween spirits.
