The AI Revolution in Medicine: GPT-4 and Beyond by Peter Lee, Carey Goldberg, and Isaac Kohane
This book was read for work, so it is clearly not the typical book that is reviewed on this blog. However, for anyone involved in data protection, data privacy, healthcare, clinical research, and/or artificial intelligence this book is a good read. If you are not in these fields but are interested in artificial intelligence and/or healthcare it is a worthwhile read. While the authors offer no clear cut answer, they do raise solid questions about the potential benefits and potential risks of the integration of AI with providing healthcare services. After finishing this book the reader is likely to have more questions than answers, and that was kind of the point of this book, to get the readers to think of the possibilities and the risks. While the authors are in favor of AI being integrated into the traditional healthcare model, they did do a fair job of raising concerns, risks, and advocating for regulation and that AI in medicine is a tool not a replacement for healthcare providers.
After reading this book, I still think of AI like I think of sharks. I am amazed by its capabilities, but a healthy fear of the danger it can be.
