Upgrade: A novel by Blake Crouch
Giving this a few days to reflect before writing the review, because this book almost seems like a reality. When reading this the reader might stop and think, this book is the warning reference like 1984 by Orwell. Taking a step back the reader will realize that hopefully this is not an immediate dystopian future, and hopefully it never will be. The main idea that genetics will be played with and manipulated by scientists to fix problems that the human race encounters is not out of the realm of possibility. Even the famine that killed millions of people could happen if genetics of animals or crops (or both) are manipulated and an unintended consequence occurs. What does, hopefully, stop this book from becoming a reality is that the manipulation of human genetics to the level that this book was able to fantasize is not happening anytime soon. The question of if such gene manipulation would turn a person into another species is interesting, but is it just the genes that make you human or is it more than that? This book could be a warning for how messing with genetics could bring the extermination of the human race to within 100 years, or it could be enjoyed for being scientific fantasy (I mean the pet dragon part was pretty cool). While there will probably not be a review of works by this author again, it was a nice read of something that is out of my normal reading preferences.
