The marketing for this book makes it sound more of a Halloween read, however the key events of the Harrison family take place during the summer. This reader feels this is an amazing summer read, and therefore the review will be posted when the events of the story take place and when it would be a light read. Yes, a light read! The main character, Peyote Trip, works in hell and makes deals for souls and the Harrisons are dealing with grief over a murder and suicide from years ago, teenage hormones/drama, and a marriage possibly falling apart but the author’s skill of making this all a light read and bringing humor into the situations is what makes this book a perfect summer read. The ghost Phil, convicted of murdering Sarah years ago, still haunts his brother Silas. Lily, married to Silas, was there that summer night and testified against Phil. But Phil’s father made a deal with Peyote and in doing so Peyote had a soul of a fourth generation of this family. This sets the situation that allows Peyote to get a full set if he get Silas or one of his kids to make a deal of their soul. Calamity, a newbie in the deals department, throws Peyote’s plans into chaos and down a new path when he learns her real back story. The ending did make me wonder if Peyote is repeating this path again and again as his version of hell. Such a great read looking forward to more from this author, Claudia Lux.

Character List/Book Summary:

Peyote Trip – made a deal for his soul that landed him in hell without being “downstairs” first. He learns of a loophole to get out of hell and live his life again he has to get a full set of souls from his family/descendants. Works with Calamity when she arrives in the deals department. After learning Calamity’s real backstory and how her father raised her Peyote makes a deal to try and help her if she helps him with the loophole. The many twists these two take make the deals department sound like more books could come out of there.

Calamity – trained as a solider by her father, was downstairs for some time before working her way up to the deals department. Very smart and manipulative. Peyote helps her see some of the lies that her father told her. Gave Peyote key information about his past to help him try and avoid ending up back in hell.

Mickey Harrison – Silas and Lily’s daughter, brings her friend Ruth to their summer house. Shy and easily influenced by Ruth, the summer leads to several changes for her.

Ruth – older than Mickey, befriends Mickey when boys are teasing Mickey. Tells Mickey that her father walked out on her and her mom, and that her mom isn’t very present. Ruth has some dangerous habits that she introduces Mickey to over the summer. Tries to contact Sarah to find out who really killed her, which gets Mickey in trouble with Silas.

Sean Harrison – Mickey’s older brother, he realizes that Ruth is not the best influence on Mickey. Has a crush on Ruth Comes out of his shell with Ruth around.

Silas Harrison – realizes that Lily has been having an affair when he finds her phone in the boat house. Thought he was in love with Sarah with he was in high school and was sleeping with her. The night of the party he was with Sarah on the float after finding out that Lily was pregnant and going to keep the child. Calls on Peyote, because his grandfather told stories of how he out smarted the devil when he made a deal for his soul.

Lily Harrison – married to Silas, but having an affair with Gavin for months. Upset about Sarah and her part in that night and what happened to Phil because she testified against him. 

Gavin – Sarah’s brother, knows a secret about Phil, and has a secret plan of his own.
